Pin Needle String Art

How to easily create a string art picture with pin needles, without hammering in nails.

What you need:

  • Canvas
  • pin needles
  • yarn or wool
  • cardboard or styrofoam as reinforcement

you will also need:

  • paint
  • pattern
  • ruler

Since the needles don’t stick to the canvas, you need a reinforcement. I used a cardboard on the back of the canvas. You can also use styrofoam.

If you have your pattern printed or drawn, cut it out and place it on the canvas. If you aren’t sure whether your pattern is centered, you can align it with the ruler. Then you can start pushing the pins into the canvas. Try to insert the needles straight and at the same depth.

Tip: Try to select a pattern that is large enough and choose the needle distances far enough because otherwise, it becomes crowded and difficult to add more needles.

When you are done, take the pattern of the canvas. Then choose your yarn or wool and start at any needle with a double knot and connect all needles.

Tip: It’s important to keep the yarn in tension at all times. But not too tight, because the needles could move.
